Why I Yanked Blogrush
Blogrush is like a really bad relationship. You try it. It works pretty well, makes you feel decent, etc.. Then you realize that your significant other has been involved in all sorts of dirty doings, and still is, and not only that, but you’re becoming associated with them.
In case you didn’t know, Blogrush is a traffic-generating site/scheme where you put a widget on your site that lists other blogs. For every referral you generate to those blogs, you receive X referrals back. Seems great. I added it to my site yesterday, and saw an immediate uptick in traffic.
Then I noticed what the other blogs looked like:
I tried to use their filtering tools, but it was hopeless. My site’s become a billboard for multi-level marketing schemes, spam blogs (splogs) and other dross. There are quality blogs in there, too. But until Blogrush can clean up the neighborhood, I gotta move out.
I’m going to wash this widget right outta my hair…

Thanks for the heads up Ian. I was considering checking it out, but after hearing what you have to say, that seals the deal. You know how it goes, leave it to people to ruin another good thing.
Shortly before this tool’s release I received a 10 paragraph launch announcement from one of those Internet Marketingpreneurs with a long-copy web site. You know the type, you sign-up for their email list and you get lots of friendly emails telling you how much they want to help you get rich and encouraging you to sign-up for their service or product.
Knowing who was pushing this tool also told me who would be using it. Thank you for confirming my suspicions.
Anyway, when I saw that this was a glorified link-exchange program I had visions of Link Metro and Link Vault and all those other terrific link exchange sites that will get you banned by Google.
No thanks. I’ll keep my ability to pass PageRank.
To be fair, I think that it’s possible that they’ll address the filtering issues. If they do, this could be a great way for blogging communities to collaborate.
But as long as multi-level marketers and spammers comprise 1/2 of the listings, it’ll be hard…
