As the clock struck zero, the Broncos were penalized for fair catch interference. According to NFL rules, a half cannot conclude on a defensive penalty or a flag thrown by the kicking team, allowing the Chargers an unexpected opportunity for a “fair catch kick.” This penalty moved them 15 yards closer, setting the stage for a unique play.
Cameron Dicker, the Chargers’ kicker, prepared for a 57-yard kick without any rush from the defense. The situation was so unusual that the ball didn’t even need to be snapped, making it feel more like a practice session than a critical game moment.
Historic Moment for the Chargers
Dicker successfully made the kick, altering the halftime score to a surprising 21-13 in favor of the Broncos. Ironically, the last successful fair catch kick in NFL history was executed by none other than Ray Wersching of the San Diego Chargers back in 1976.
This kick marked the 27th recorded fair catch kick in NFL history, including postseason games, and only the seventh to successfully pass through the uprights. The last attempt before Dicker’s successful kick came in 2019 when Joey Slye missed a 60-yard attempt.
Breaking Records
Dicker’s impressive kick now holds the record for the longest fair catch kick in NFL history, surpassing the previous record of 52 yards set by Paul Hornung in 1964. Prior to this successful attempt, there had been nine unsuccessful fair catch kicks, highlighting the rarity of such plays. Interestingly, most fair catch kicks are longer than 70 yards due to their typical positioning on the opposite side of the field.
