Tragic News from Illinois Football Program
Dimel was serving as a senior offensive assistant for the Illinois football program at the time of his death, which was confirmed by the team. According to his agent, Pete Roussel, Dimel died in his sleep, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered by many in the college football community.
A Coaching Journey Through Multiple Programs
Dana Dimel had a rich coaching career, spanning several institutions. He was the head coach at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) for six seasons and previously held the head coaching position at Wyoming in the late 1990s. His coaching journey also included leading the Houston Cougars from 2000 to 2002.
Dimel’s foundation in football began at Kansas State, where he earned All-American honors as an offensive lineman. His coaching career took off under the mentorship of legendary coach Bill Snyder, where he spent many years in various assistant roles before becoming the offensive coordinator for the Wildcats in 1995.
A Lasting Impact at Kansas State
In 2009, Dimel returned to Kansas State, reclaiming his role as offensive coordinator. His extensive tenure with the Wildcats lasted 20 seasons, during which he contributed to the team’s participation in 12 bowl games and celebrated a Big 12 championship victory in 2012.

Bill Snyder, who had a profound influence on Dimel’s coaching journey, expressed his sadness over the news. “Obviously, we are very saddened by the passing of Dana,” Snyder stated. “He was a special friend and coaching companion. I admired his passion for helping his players and fellow coaches. He was a big part of the development of the Kansas State football program, and, along with his wife Julie, very meaningful in the Manhattan community.”

Throughout his career at the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level, Dimel compiled a head coaching record of 50 wins and 88 losses. He was named senior offensive assistant for Illinois in July, where he continued to inspire those around him.
