Former Cowboys Legend Jason Witten Considered as Head Coach Following Mike McCarthy’s Departure

The Dallas Cowboys are embarking on a crucial journey to find their next head coach. Following the recent announcement that Mike McCarthy and the organization have mutually agreed to part ways, discussions are heating up around potential candidates to lead the team.

Jerry Jones Confirms McCarthy’s Exit

In a statement made on Monday, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones confirmed the split with McCarthy. “Prior to reaching the point of contract negotiations, it became mutually clear that it would be better for each of us to head in a different direction,” Jones stated. He expressed his gratitude towards McCarthy and his family, acknowledging their significant contributions to the Cowboys community.

Speculation Surrounds Possible Replacements

With McCarthy’s departure, speculation about his successor has begun. During ESPN’s pregame coverage of the wild-card round game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Minnesota Vikings, reports surfaced about former Cowboys star tight end Jason Witten being considered for the head coaching position.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter provided insights during the “Monday Night Countdown” broadcast, stating, “They can and will conduct a search here to try and find the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.” He mentioned that while it is still early in the process, names like Kellen Moore, the Eagles’ offensive coordinator, and Witten are already making waves in discussions.

Jason Witten: A Franchise Great

Jason Witten, who was drafted by the Cowboys in the third round of the 2003 NFL Draft, is a revered figure in the franchise’s history. He dedicated nearly all his NFL career to the Cowboys, retiring after the 2017 season, only to return in 2019 after a brief stint in broadcasting with ESPN. Witten holds the record for the most receptions and receiving yards in Cowboys history and last played in the NFL with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020.

Other Potential Candidates

In addition to Witten, another former Cowboys star, Deion Sanders, has been linked to the head coaching vacancy. Sanders, who won a Super Bowl with the Cowboys during his five-year tenure, is currently serving as the head football coach at Colorado. If he were to make a return to the Dallas-Fort Worth area, it would align with Jerry Jones’ trend of hiring former players, similar to Jason Garrett, who coached from 2010 to 2019.

A New Era for the Cowboys

The Cowboys are entering a critical phase after concluding the past regular season with a disappointing 7-10 record. The team faced significant challenges, including starting quarterback Dak Prescott missing the final nine games due to a hamstring injury. As the search for a new head coach begins, the franchise looks to reset and build a stronger future.
