Understand the meaning of the lyrics of "Monotonía", new song by Shakira

Shakira released, this Wednesday (19), her new single, “Monotonía (ft. Ozuna)”. As expected, the song talks about the end of a relationship, in what seems to be a true open letter from the Colombian singing the end of her marriage with player Piqué.

The lyrics feature moments where Shak shares the blame, but also others where she speaks openly about her ex’s misconceptions. The track also features Ozuna, a Puerto Rican reggaeton star.

See the main excerpts from the lyrics of “Monotonía” and what they mean below:

SHARING RESPONSIBILITY

“No fue culpa tuya ni tampoco mía
It was the monotony’s fault
Never say anything but it hurts me
I knew that this would pass”

“It wasn’t your fault, nor mine.
It was the monotony’s fault
I never said anything but it hurt me
I knew this would happen”

The chorus opens the song showing Shakira in a moment when she takes responsibility for the end of the relationship, sharing it with the other person.

Here she also demonstrates that her intuition was right about the monotony between the two, which was leading to the end.

POINTED THE ERRORS

“Suddenly you were not el mismo
you left me for your narcissism
You forgot what one day we were
Ehh ehh ehh”

“Suddenly you weren’t the same anymore
You left me because of your narcissism
You forgot what we once were
Eh eh eh”

In another verse, the Colombian woman sings about what let her down in her former better half. From personality change to narcissism, she laments that what the two of them once were is sadly behind them.

THE RENT OF SOMEONE WHO TRIED TO SAVE THE RELATIONSHIP

“You distant with your attitude
Yes, it filled me with disquiet
Tú no daba ni la mitad
But if I know I say more than you
I was running for someone
That for me was walking
This love has not died but is delirious”

“You distant with your attitude
And it filled me with anxiety
You didn’t even give half
But I know I gave more than you
was running for someone
That for me was not even walking
This love has not died, but is delirious”

In these verses, once again the singer shows how she felt about the attitudes of her ex. But more than that, she vents and says that she tried to save the relationship more than the other person, who in her words “was walking” while she “was running”.

THE RECOGNITION OF WHAT HAS COME TO THE END

“It’s better than this if it ends ya
Don’t repeat the movie to me again, that’s what I saw
Bebe I want you but that’s what you want me more
It’s a necessary goodbye what a day was incredible”

“This better be over now
Don’t repeat the movie to me again that I’ve already seen
Baby I love you but I love myself more
It’s a necessary goodbye to what was once amazing.”

In the final part of the song, Shakira hints that her ex tried to get back together with her one more time (“Don’t repeat the movie”). And finally, she leaves a lesson in self-love by saying that she loves herself more and putting an end to “what was once amazing”.

Here Shak makes it clear that she is ready for the next chapter in her love life.

“Monotony”

It was not culpa tuya ni tampoco mía
It was the monotony’s fault
Never say anything but it hurts me
I knew that this would pass

Lo tuyo y haciendo lo mismo
Always looking for protagonism
You forgot what one day we were
And the worst is that

It was not culpa tuya ni tampoco mía
It was the monotony’s fault
Never say anything but it hurts me
I knew that this would pass

Suddenly you were not el mismo
you left me for your narcissism
You forgot what one day we were
Ehh ehh ehh

You distant with your attitude
Yes, it filled me with disquiet
Tú no daba ni la mitad
But if I know I say more than you
I was running for someone
That for me was walking
This love is not dead but is delirious

Ya de lo que había ya no hay na’
I tell you with sincerity you are cold as in Christmas
It’s better than this if it ends ya
Don’t repeat the movie to me again, that’s what I saw
Bebe I want you but that’s what you want me more
It’s a necessary goodbye what a day was incredible
if it became routine
I don’t know anything your lips
Now it’s all the opposite
And the worst is that

It was not culpa tuya ni tampoco mía
It was the monotony’s fault
Never say anything but it hurts me
I knew that this would pass

You en lo tuyo y haciendo lo mismo
Always looking for protagonism
And you forgot what one day we were
eh eh eh

ozuna, oh

Hi Music Hi Flow

“Monotony”

It wasn’t your fault, nor mine.
It was the monotony’s fault
I never said anything but it hurt me
I knew this would happen

You in yours and doing the same
Always in search of protagonism
You forgot what we once were
And the worst is that

It wasn’t your fault, nor mine.
It was the monotony’s fault
I never said anything but it hurt me
I knew this would happen

Suddenly you weren’t the same anymore
You left me because of your narcissism
You forgot what we once were
eh eh eh

You distant with your attitude
And it filled me with anxiety
You didn’t even give half
But I know I gave more than you
was running for someone
That for me was not even walking
This love hasn’t died, but it’s delirious

Than there was, there is no more
I tell you with sincerity that you are cold like Christmas
This better end now
Don’t repeat the movie to me again that I’ve already seen
Baby I love you but I love myself more
It’s a necessary goodbye to what was once amazing
It became routine
Your lips don’t taste like anything to me
Now everything is the opposite
And the worst is that

It wasn’t your fault, nor mine.
It was the monotony’s fault
I never said anything but it hurt me
I knew this would happen

You in yours and doing the same
Always in search of protagonism
And you forgot what we once were
eh eh eh

Ozuna, oh
Shaka, huh
