Announcing RainGage
Ian Lurie May 21 2014
TL;DR version:
Portent’s just launched RainGage Enterprise and RainGage™ Essentials. RainGage assesses your online marketing and recommends improvements that win you more business. It provides three layers of marketing recommendations:
- A strategic assessment across your entire marketing mix
- A tactical assessment showing areas for improvement
- A page-by-page, post-by-post (on RainGage Enterprise) and image-by-image set of recommendations
It’s based on some damned amazing analysis by the Portent team, and our 19 years experience in digital marketing.
There’s a free beta. It’s a beta, remember.
You can register here.
You can read more about it here, or in this post.
And, for more details:
RainGage Essentials
RainGage Essentials is an application we built on top of the larger RainGage Engine. It provides a fast, high-level look at site quality and delivers a simple report with recommendations, as well as downloadable lists of items to fix.
Here’s what a report looks like:

A RainGage Essentials Report
At the top: A high-level strategic assessment based on The Marketing Stack.

Strategic Assessment. Yup, the Marketing Stack.
In the middle: A tactical, prioritized assessment of problem areas.

Tactical Assessment
At the bottom: A detailed explanation of what to change down to the page and image affected.

Item-by-Item Recommendations
We built RainGage Essentials as the entry point for businesses. Brands are now able to self-analyze factors we’ve found critical to visibility, user experience, and conversion…
- Reading grade level
- Page structure from a readability standpoint
- Typical site performance and SEO stuff
- Site errors
- Responsive design
- A few other things
…and then provides a set of recommendations based on a weighting algorithm we built around the Marketing Stack.
RainGage Enterprise
RainGage Enterprise dives much deeper into your marketing mix. It checks performance for marketing channels, down to individual posts and ads, as well as the site diagnostic.
It also pulls Google Analytics data. RainGage Enterprise isn’t available as a ‘public’ tool. If you want to check it out, send us a note.
The RainGage Engine
The RainGage Engine powers all of these tools. It collects about 1,200 metrics and then draws correlations between those metrics and site performance.
The engine collects a lot of data about a company’s online marketing:
- Social media performance down to the Facebook comment and post type, and individual Tweet
- Goal tracking, visits, page performance, etc. (if authorized) via Google Analytics, if authorized
- Coming shortly: Site spelling errors and typos
- Coming really shortly: Page speed and performance
Then it puts all of that data in a single place, analyzes it, and determines what impacts your bottom line, whatever that line may be.
Portent can provide a super-detailed report directly from the the platform. We’re calling that RainGage Enterprise.
The Algorithm
The algorithm for both Essentials and Enterprise is always learning. If you see bizarre results in an Essentials report, send ’em to us using the contact form. We’ll be tuning continuously. Your report results will update automatically as we dial things in.
Pricing
For RainGage Essentials: When we finish our beta, we’ll be selling reports based on number of pages analyzed. There’s no subscription: You can pay as you go. Cool, huh?
For RainGage Enterprise: Contact us.
The beta
You can sign up and run 50-page RainGage Essentials reports for free. No limit, really.
Just please remember, it’s a beta. We’re putting it out there because we know we’ll get great feedback. So provide it!
Thanks, and enjoy.
