Time management for internet marketers
Ian Lurie Nov 29 2012
You can learn to manage your time, or you can end each day curled up in a ball under your desk. At least, those were my choices.
I never found a pre-conceived time management system that worked for me as an internet marketer. GTD, Pomodoro, etc. all have great elements but couldn’t quite fit the bill, because none of them assume interruptions. And let’s face it: If you’re a marketer, or any other kind of consultant, you’re going to get interrupted. A lot. So I took bits and pieces from the various systems and cobbled together something that works for me.
You don’t have to use my system, or anyone else’s. But you should definitely find a time management routine that works for you and stick with it. After writing, this is the biggest roadblock I see for folks coming up in the marketing world: You have to be able to stay focused an efficient, even when angry marketing space monkeys are leaping out from every corner (Firefly reference, sorry).
I presented the whole thing in a webinar this morning. Here’s the slide deck (I won’t be annotating this one – sorry):
And here’s the video. Please let me know if this loads agonizingly slow. I uploaded it at very high quality:
Transcript coming soon. Oh, and here’s the link bundle with all the stuff I mention in the presentation.

even when angry marketing space monkeys are leaping out from every corner you sir are one of my favorite people ever to use this in your article.
You wrote: GTD, Pomodoro, etc. all have great elements but couldn’t quite fit the bill, because none of them assume interruptions.
GTD provides a trusted system that gives you the ability to deal with interruptions without a stres. There is even a short David Allen video about this topic.
RADICAL!!! (I felt like if there was ever a time for me to say that in the last 20 years- it’s here and now). Time management is my BIGGEST problem. I love what I do and I happen to think I’m pretty good at it too – but where the hell does the time go!??!! Thank you for this info – super excited to really dig into it!
Saved myself 40 minutes by spending 10 minutes turbo clicking through the deck jotting down notes for later.
Tips I use but might not work for others:
1) Don’t answer every email.
2) Don’t reply to emails you’re cc’d on.
3) If there aren’t visible flames, it’s probably not on fire.
#3 is crucial for me, I gotta say.
